Im Zuge dieser Entwicklung wurden Web Applikationen geschaffen, die sowohl Kommunikation als auch Kollaboration der Menschen unterstützen. Diese Kategorie von Anwendungen werden gemeinhin als „Social Software" bezeichnet. Unter Enterprise 2.0 wird die Adaption von „Social Software" in ein geschäftliches Umfeld verstanden.

Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie erstrebenswert es für ein Unternehmen ist den Wandel hin zum „Enterprise 2.0“ zu vollziehen. Dabei wird ebenso auf die Schwierigkeiten, als auch auf die dauerhaften Vorteile eingegangen. Um den praktischen Nutzen dieser Arbeit zu validieren, werden einige Beispiele aus Unternehmen genannt, die aktuell „Social Software“ einsetzen und damit sich und ihre Produkte/Dienstleistungen verbessern. Es wurden bewusst Unternehmen gewählt, die in ganz unterschiedlichen Branchen tätig sind, um den universellen Charakter einer „Enterprise 2.0“ Kultur herauszustellen. Zur einfacheren Beurteilung der Problematik wurde eine gründliche SWOT-Analyse durchgeführt, die schnell einen Überblick über die Thematik ermöglicht.

Da sich dieser Prozess häufig auch auf die Organisationsstrukturen von Unternehmen auswirkt, ist er schwer oder gar nicht reversibel. Aus diesem Grunde ist ein wesentlicher Teil dieser Arbeit eine kritische Reflexion über das Thema „Enterprise 2.0“ und der Versuch eine Prognose über zukünftige Entwicklungen abzugeben.
