Cette fois pourtant, je ne pars que pour un mois et je ne vais pas plus loin que Constantinople, mais le voyage sera sombre… Il faut bien qu'il se soit joué là-bas un acte inoubliable de cette féerie noire qui a été ma vie, pour que je m'inquiète ainsi de la pensée d'y retourner; pour que tout ce qui en vient, un mot tartare qui me repasse en tête, une arme d'Orient, une étoffe turque, un parfum, aussitôt me plonge dans une rêverie d'exilé où réapparaît Stamboul! Et ce n'est pas par simple fantaisie d'art non plus, qu'ici mon appartement est pareil à celui de quelque émir d'autrefois, ressemble à une demeure orientale qui, par sortilège, se serait incrustée au milieu de ma chère maison héréditaire, avec ses arceaux dentelés, ses broderies d'ors archaïques et ses chaux blanches. Un charme dont je ne me déprendrai jamais m'a été jeté par l'Islam, au temps où j'habitais la rive du Bosphore, et je subis de mille manières ce charme-là, même dans les choses, dans les dessins, dans les couleurs, jusque dans ces vieilles fleurs de rêve qui sont ici naïvement peintes sur les faïences de mes murs. Et surtout il m'attire, ce charme triste, il m'attire vers là-bas où je serai demain.
