Dieser Prozess hat neben angesprochenen Ursachen auch weit reichende Auswirkungen auf die Wirtschaft, die Planung und die Menschen in solchen Agglomerationsräumen. Letztendlich muss die Raumplanung lernen mit auftretenden Problemen umzugehen, um sie in Zukunft vielleicht sogar vermeiden zu können. Durch die aktuellen Diskussionen um geeignete Instrumente, ob der Suburbanisierung also auf radikalem Wege (durch Eingemeindungen) oder mit sanfteren Methoden (Steueränderungen, u.a.) entgegnet wird, zeigt sich die Aktualität und Notwendigkeit der Steuerung dieser Stadtentwicklungsphase.
Da die Suburbanisierung aber auch nur ein kleiner Teil im Aufgabenspektrum der Raumplaner ist, stellen sich viel weiter reichende Fragen. Wie kann der Flächenverbrauch und die Versiegelungsintensität verringert werden? Wie kann eine nachhaltige Nutzung des knappen Faktors Fläche erreicht werden? Und wie kann dabei die Natur am besten geschützt werden? Diese und weitere Fragen gilt es in naher Zukunft zu beantworten und in Angriff zu nehmen, damit auch nachfolgende Generationen noch Spaß am Leben haben werden.
