Allerdings haben seine drei weiteren Bücher ‚Der Geist des Films’ (1930), ‚Kunst des Films’ (1938) und ‚Der Film. Werden und Wesen einer neuen Kunst’ (1949) ebenfalls eine wichtige Rolle im filmtheoretischen Diskurs gespielt.
‚Der sichtbare Mensch’ gilt als das Hauptwerk der Schauspieltheorie. Es fasst die teilweise ähnlichen Theorieansätze eines Herbert Tannenbaum, Walter Thielemann oder Urban Gad präzise zusammen und erweitert sie zu einer Schauspieltheorie - so zumindest laut Helmut H. Diederichs. Balázs Werk fand damals regen Absatz und gilt somit als „erste[r] große[r] filmtheoretische[r] Entwurf der Stummfilmzeit in deutscher Sprache“. (Loewy, Hanno: Die Geister Des Films. In ‚Der sichtbare Mensch’ finden sich nicht nur schauspieltheoretische Ansätze, sondern auch bereits Positionen Balázs zu Bilder- und Kameraführung. In der folgenden Arbeit soll es nun hauptsächlich um Béla Balázs Werk ‚Der Geist des Films’ gehen.
