The aim in compiling this second edition has been to pull together into a single volume information about who sells what to the UK library and information world. It has been designed to serve two purposes. For large scale - whether one-off acute purchases such as a new library automation system or a mobile stack, or the chronic decisions such as book supplier or periodicals agent - it will tell you who is in the market and how to contact them. For the more trivial or out-of-the-way items, it may point to the one organization able to supply what is needed. The criteria for inclusion has been that the organization has shown a strong interest in selling into the library and information market during the past 18 months. In practice this means either that it has attended one of the four major trade shows (the Library Association's Umbrella meeting, TALES's Library Resources Exhibition, the Library Technology Fair at Hatfield Polytechnic and the December International Online Information) or that it has taken out a display advert in the "LA Record". One major group of exhibitors has been excluded: publishers of databases and printed publications which are normally distributed through normal trade channels - online hosts and the book trade respectively. These are covered in other directories, and sit awkwardly in a publication dealing with organizations which sell directly to libraries and information units. It cannot be emphasised too strongly that inclusion in the LAD implies neither approval or disapproval of the company or its products by editor of publisher. The short piece of copy which accompanies each alphabetic entry has been derived from the organization's own promotional material.
